Fish in January: Tai (Gilt-head bream)


Since "Tai" rhymes with the word "medetai", meaning auspicious, it is regarded as a “good fortune” fish in Japan. That's why Tai (Ma-dai) is often served there at celebratory feasts from New Year.  

He-dai is a family of Tai fish popular in Europe called Gilt-head bream, and the taste is as delicious as Ma-dai that Japanese revere it as one of the best-tasting fish in the sea.
